Initially, when I saw the “ddamdajo” teaser, I expected it to be just another typical rom-com. However, the first episode completely blew me away. It was hilarious and heartwarming, and the chemistry between Park Seo Joon and Kim Ji Won was outstanding from the start. While I wasn’t previously a fan of Park Seo Joon and had little interest in his Instagram, I’ve become a huge admirer of his performance in FFMW. Kim Ji Won, whom I already admired from her bold role in DOTS, now shares the spotlight with Park Seo Joon in my fangirling.

The story is incredibly refreshing, light, and genuine. It’s about dreams, friendship, family, and love—how to live life fully and face challenges with courage. Dong Man and Ae Ra teach valuable lessons on staying strong and brave, and the dialogue packs an emotional punch.

The music is fantastic—I’ve played Kassy’s “Good Morning” almost 100 times a day. My phone’s playlist features just three FFMW songs, which I have on repeat, including BtoB’s “Ambiguous” and Ryu Ji Hyun’s “Night is Gone Again.” I also love the comedic background music, especially during the aegyo scenes.

I’ve tried many dramas with great reviews and couldn’t get into them, and vice versa. While reviews can be a starting point, it’s best to approach a drama with a blank slate to avoid disappointment. I usually stick to reading the summary of the storyline.

I initially had no interest in this drama and didn’t find SJ appealing at first. Can you believe that? Lol. But after seeing so many previews of their headlock and charm scenes, I finally gave it a shot and fell in love with the characters. Dong Man won me over when he shielded Ae Ra from view while she cried—he truly captured my heart. The vulnerability of all the characters and their comfort in crying in front of each other was touching.

The chemistry among the fantastic four is amazing—total friendship goals. They genuinely care for each other, and the silly antics of the two falling in love were hilarious. I appreciate that there are no crazy villains or excessive parental drama. The main couple was incredibly adorkable (I know, not a real word), and their love story felt genuine.

Once they realized their feelings, there was no pretense. While some might find the female lead annoying, I understand her. She may be selfish at times, but her heart breaks whenever she sees him hurt because she loves him so much. The characters are all flawed and real.

In this drama, the lack of parental involvement is notable. We don’t hear much about Ae Ra, Dong Man, or any of the other characters’ parents. This focus on the characters’ personal development and storylines highlights their independence and modern lifestyles—living alone or with roommates, a reflection of contemporary Korean youth.

I’m puzzled by why so many fans are fixated on seeing a kiss scene between the main leads. This drama isn’t about that. It seems that people today are overly obsessed with kiss scenes and often sexualize actors and actresses. There’s so much more to appreciate in this drama. Fans should take the time to fully engage with the storyline and characters rather than fixating on romantic clichés.

I have great respect for this drama for not relying heavily on kissing scenes and instead focusing on character development and realistic scenarios. The connection I felt with the characters and their struggles made the drama resonate deeply. I also appreciate the moral of the story: even if you end up in a job that isn’t your passion but provides a livable wage, you can still find contentment. However, it’s important to recognize that true happiness comes from pursuing what you love, regardless of your age or current circumstances.

The drama could have been better, and I’ve definitely seen more impressive work. The writing is the main issue here—not terrible, but not particularly strong either. The premise is interesting: a story about ordinary people who would typically be “extras” in a traditional drama. While it does capture some of that essence, it often reverts to familiar K-drama tropes like a dark past, family secrets, and hidden talents, which don’t really feel ordinary.

Ahn Jae-hong and Song Ha-yoon deliver grounded and relatable performances, making their storyline the highlight of the show for me. I found myself wishing the drama focused more on them.
